Phone Scam Targets PSE&G Customers

PSE&G is warning customers to be on alert for a phone scam where the caller threatens to shut off electric and gas service unless payment is made.

The scammer pretends to work for PSE&G and demands unwitting customers make payment using a Green Dot Money Pak, a pre-paid card found at pharmacies and convenience stores.

“PSE&G does not accept these cards. The utility offers a variety of payment options, and would never require a customer to use one specific type of payment,” the company said in a news release.

Customers worried if a call from PSE&G is legitimate were urged to call the utility directly at 1-800-436-PSEG (7734).

According to PSE&G, anyone facing a utility shut off would receive written notice on their bill 10 days in advance. The company encouraged anyone with billing issues to call with questions.
