Police: Teaneck Man Tried to Slash Englewood Store Clerk

Security camera footage and partial license plate led to man's arrest, city police say.

Security camera footage and an observant 7-Eleven clerk led Englewood police to charge a Teaneck man with pulling a knife on the convenience store worker last month, authorities said Wednesday night.

Gregory Stewart, 36, menaced the clerk at Englewood's Tenafly Road 7-Eleven with a knife early April 21 in an argument over the price of cigarettes, police said.

Englewood Detective Adolfo Gutierrez identified Stewart as the attacker using the store's security camera footage and a partial license plate number spotted by the clerk, according to Detective Capt. Timothy Torell of the Englewood Police Department.

“After a thorough review of video cameras in the store, this was just an argument that Stewart took to another level," Torell said. "The clerk narrowly escaped serious injury after Stewart pulled a knife from his pocket, leaned across the counter and tried to slash him.”

Stewart was arrested Wednesday afternoon on charges of second-degree aggregated assault and third-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. He was released from city police headquarters on $25,000 bond, police said. The case will now be referred to the county prosecutor's office.
