Public Hearing Scheduled For Hackensack River Bridge Project
The project, if approved, would replace the Route 4 Hackensack River Bridge. The proposed project could be completed by 2028.
TEANECK, NJ — The New Jersey Department of Transportation is hosting a virtual public information center for residents to learn more about the proposed Route 4 Hackensack River Bridge replacement project, and to comment on it.
This virtual information center will open on Nov. 29 and remain active through Dec. 10 at "www.rt4hackensackriverbridge.com".

According to the DOT, the project would replace the bridge entirely. This is because the structure, built in 1931, "is in poor condition" and is "requiring increased maintenance repairs to allow it to remain open to traffic as it is nearing the end of its service life."
During the project, which, if approved, could see construction begin sometime in 2025, transportation and pedestrian access between Hackensack and Teaneck would remain possible.

What else is being proposed?
The bridge would be completely replaced and, in the process, be widened. When it reopens, three standard travel lanes will be active, as will an auxiliary lane and six-foot sidewalk, which includes a barrier for eastbound and westbound travel.
The redeveloped bridge would also include accommodations for a proposed Bergen County Hackensack Pathway project for pedestrian and bike access, according to the DOT.
Additional improvements would include:
- sidewalk connectivity
- ADA-compliant curb ramps
- standard bridge railing
- new guide rail at the bridge approaches
- improved signage and lighting
- emergency responder river access accommodations
What's the timeline?
Nothing is set in stone, but the DOT does have an estimated schedule for the project, but most of that depends on funding availability.
Preliminary engineering would be completed by the spring of 2022, with final design work set to begin the same year.
Construction is anticipated to begin in 2025, and could be completed by 2028 under this suggested timeline, again, dependent on funding.
