Teaneck Police Charge Virginia Man in Burglary After Chase

Officers disrupt burglary in progress, arrest man after foot chase, police say.

A call from a Cranford Place resident led police to a burglar who was tackled trying to escape officers Tuesday, authorities said.

The resident called police around 5:30 p.m. to report a suspicious man peering into a neighbor’s window, Teaneck Detective Lt. Andrew McGurr said. When officers went to investigate in a backyard, the man fled.

“They chased him through several yards, over several fences,” McGurr said.

Officers initially lost the man, but didn’t give up their pursuit. McGurr said the burglar jumped out from behind a bush and took off again as Teaneck officers and a Bergen County Police Department K-9 approached.

Township Detective Randy Morales ended the would-be escape, tackling the burglar near businesses by Teaneck Road and Edgemont Place, police said. Fellow officers quickly converged on the area to make the arrest.

The man, identified as 22-year-old Seth Vern George, resisted officers, McGurr said. Police found George had assorted jewelry, video games, a pry bar and chisel.

George tried to hide a ski mask by apparently stuffing it down his pants, McGurr said. Rooms in the house George was seen at had been ransacked and a basement window forced open.

“He made entry and was in the process of burglarizing the residence when the officers arrived,” McGurr said.

It was not clear why George, a Newport News, Va. resident, was in Teaneck and detectives were investigating if he had any accomplices.

He faces charges including burglary, theft, obstruction and resisting arrest. Records show he remained held Wednesday at the Bergen County Jail on $10,000 bail, with no ten percent option.
