Police asked drivers to stay off the roads as freezing rain has made morning driving "very difficult," but Kazinci said road conditions have improved after Department of Public Works employees spread salt in the township.

On Wednesday morning, the National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory statewide as freezing rain fell on slippery sidewalks, roads and bridges.

"Temperatures are warming across the area. There may still be lingering ice patches overuntreated surfaces," the weather service said. "Travel with caution the rest of the morning."

Speed limits on the New Jersey Turnpike and the Garden State Parkway have been reduced to 45 mph due to slippery conditions as crews salt the roads, according to 511nj.org.
