CLIFFSIDE PARK, NJ — A mom and son were seriously burned in a Cliffside Park three-alarm house fire that started in the kitchen Monday night, according to officials and media reports.

Firefighter arrived at a multifamily home on Lawton Street just before 6:30 p.m. where they found found a 58-year-old woman and 33-year-old man who had evacuated, but had severe burns, prosecutors said.

Both were taken to Hackensack University Medical Center. The man was later taken to Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, for further treatment, prosecutors said.

Prosecutors said that the fire "does not appear suspicious in nature."

NJ.com quoted Cliffside Park Fire Chief Gregory Yfantis as saying that the woman was deep-frying food with cooking oil and turned away for a few minutes to tend to her dogs. When she tried to extinguish the flamers herself, she suffered third-degree burns that were not life-threatening, the report said.
