TOMS RIVER, NJ — Star Students are found in classrooms, on concert and theater stages and at debate lecterns, and out in the community doing good things to make life better for all of us.

Here at Patch, we've launched an initiative to help recognize Star Students, and we’re working to tell the stories of these outstanding kids to their neighbors.

This submission comes from Carol Peck, who nominated her daughter Candice, of Toms River.

Why do you believe the star local student should be recognized?

Candice, who's a 9th grader, excels in academics, consistently high honor roll with straight As and A+s every making period since 6th grade. She has played softball since 7 years old and as a 15-year-old still plays with the same organization, the Toms River Tornadoes (she was 14U at 11 and 12 years old, 16U at 13 years old and started 18U at 14 years old). She's a fantastic artist gifted and talented beyond her years; she donates art, designs, drawings and jewelry she makes to great causes, makes awards cards and gifts for people to buy and give as gifts; raises awareness for the veteran suicide epidemic and is very active in the local veteran organization MA-22 working closely with the founder, Dennis Adesso, and her father, Jim Peck, by raising money rucking 22 kilometers *(13.62 miles) usually twice a year. She designs the T-shirts for our team that has won most funds raised two years in a row!! She is a great friend, an amazing daughter and granddaughter and is excelling in all honors as a Business Academy student. She is looking forward to high school softball this spring. "Candy" makes us proud every day!!

What's one thing you want everyone to know about the star local student?

She is humble and kind. She does everything expecting nothing in return.

Congratulations on your achievements, and all of our best wishes to you in the future, Candice!
