Community Medical Center Achieves Center of Excellence in Robotic Surgery Reaccreditation

Toms River, New Jersey – August 19, 2024 – Community Medical Center (CMC), an RWJBarnabas Health hospital, recently achieved reaccreditation from the Surgical Review Corporation (SRC) as a Center of Excellence in Robotic Surgery. This accreditation recognizes CMC’s commitment and high standard of delivery of quality patient care and safety.

Status as an accredited Center of Excellence means that CMC has met nationally and internationally recognized standards. Not all hospitals and surgeons seek accreditation; not all that undergo the rigorous inspection process are granted accreditation. CMC was the third hospital in New Jersey to attain this accreditation and has maintained it since 2018.

Community Medical Center’s Robotic Surgery program was the first of its kind in the region and is staffed by highly skilled surgeons with over a decade of experience in robotic surgery procedures. Surgeons use robotic surgery for gynecology, gyn/oncology, urology, general, colorectal and orthopedic surgical procedures. CMC’s Robotic Surgery Program features two daVinci Robotic Surgery programs, including the latest generation da Vinci Xi, and the Mako robotic arm-assisted system for joint replacement surgery. The hospital’s Rectal Cancer Program is also accredited by the National Accreditation Program for Rectal Cancer, a quality program of the American College of Surgeons.

“We believe our patients should not have to travel far from home for world-class care, so we have worked tirelessly to bring and grow cutting-edge services and technology to the greater Ocean County area,” said Patrick Ahearn, Chief Executive Officer. “Our patients benefit from our talented and experienced team of surgeons who specialize in robotic surgery, and receive top-notch, high quality care from our skilled staff. I am proud of our surgeons and clinical and support staff and this achievement that validates their efforts.”

Health care facilities and surgeons seeking an SRC accreditation undergo an extensive assessment and inspection process to ensure the applicant meets SRC’s proven standards and requirements. These requirements include surgical volumes, facility equipment, clinical pathways and standardized operating procedures, an emphasis on patient education and continuous quality assessment. Inspectors educate staff in the accredited departments on best practices to help an organization improve its care and services.

“We’re proud to recognize Community Medical Center for its commitment to advancing and providing quality care for all patients,” said Gary M. Pratt, CEO of SRC. “This accreditation signals that this facility is among the best in this specialty and is dedicated to delivering the highest level of care possible.”
