Driver Dies After Car Splits In Half On Garden State Parkway: Police

The vehicle struck a traffic sign support and split in half while the driver was traveling on the parkway in South Toms River, police said.

TOMS RIVER, NJ - A South Toms River Woman died in a Friday evening crash after her car split in two on the Garden State Parkway, state police said.

The crash was reported around 6:30 p.m. on the Garden State Parkway north of milepost 80.7 in South Toms River, a spokesperson for the New Jersey State Police told Patch.

An initial investigation found that the driver of a Toyota Camry traveling northbound in the left lane of the Garden State Parkway ran off the road to the left, struck a wooden traffic sign support and hit a concrete traffic sign support, police said.

The Toyota then split in half, with the front section or the Toyota re-entering the roadway, traveling across all three travel lanes and struck a Jeep Renegade in the right lane before impacting the guardrail on the right, police said.

The driver, identified as Christina M. Citarella, 40, of Bayville, was ejected from her vehicle and sustained fatal injuries, police added.

The crash remains under investigation.
