Motorcyclist Killed In Route 70 Crash With Trooper Identified As Toms River Man

The Toms River man was taken to a Mount Holly hospital where he died an hour after the crash, authorities said.

SOUTHAMPTON, NJ — A Toms River man has been identified as the motorcyclist who died after a crash involving a New Jersey State Trooper on Route 70 in Burlington County earlier this month.

Frank Lando Jr., 65, of Toms River, was riding the motorcycle involved in the crash with New Jersey State Trooper Anthony Fernandes on April 9, New Jersey Attorney General Matthew Platkin announced Friday.

Fernandes was on patrol on Route 70 when his trooper vehicle collided with Lando's motorcycle in the area of Burrs Mill Road in Southampton about 11:35 a.m. on April 9, Platkin's office said.

Lando was taken to Virtua Mount Holly Hospital, where he was pronounced dead about 12:45 p.m., authorities said.

Fernandes did not sustain significant injuries, authorities said.

The circumstances leading to and surrounding the crash remain under investigation, authorities said.

The investigation is being conducted pursuant to Attorney General Directive 2019-4, which requires the Attorney General’s Office conduct the investigation of any death that occurs during an encounter with a law enforcement officer acting in the officer’s official capacity or while the decedent is in custody, and which establishes clear standards and procedures for conducting such investigations., authorities said.
