Route 166 Curb Work, Paving Set In Toms River

There will be shoulder closures initially and later overnight road work, state officials said.

TOMS RIVER, NJ — Drivers will want to avoid Route 166 beginning Wednesday as a road resurfacing project begins between Presidential Boulevard and Lomell Lane, the state Department of Transportation announced Tuesday.

Work on the 1-mile stretch, part of a $5.4 million maintenance project, is expected to be completed in late fall, the NJDOT says.

Beginning at 7 a.m. Wednesday there will be daytime shoulder closures in both directions on Route 166 for curb and sidewalk repairs and drainage improvements.

The work will be from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, and will halt for Labor Day weekend because NJDOT does not allow lane closures beginning at 6 a.m. Friday through noon Tuesday, Sept. 3. Work on Route 166 will resume daily after the holiday.

NJDOT officials said the work would continue for several weeks, and drivers are urged to slow down, use caution and expect delays driving through the area.

Milling and paving is expected to begin in late September, once the curb and sidewalk repairs are completed, and will be done overnight.

Work is scheduled from 8 p.m. until 6 a.m. the next day, Monday through Thursday nights.

Route 166 will be reduced to one lane from the intersection with Presidential Boulevard/Old Freehold Road to Lomell Lane, and there will be alternating traffic during that time.

The milling and paving work may require ramp closures; when closures happen there will be detours in place.
