Downtown Toms River Streets Flood, Power Knocked Out As Thunderstorm Inundates Area
Heavy rain was causing street flooding downtown in addition to power outages in the area along Route 37, from Holiday City on east.
TOMS RIVER, NJ — Heavy rain from a localized thunderstorm flooded some Toms River streets and knocked out power to more than 4,200 homes and businesses Thursday afternoon.
A witness told Patch the water on Water Street was several inches deep on the road; at least one driver got stuck in the water on Herflicker Boulevard. Water was up to the bottom of the door frames of several businesses along Water Street, the witness said.
A reader posting on Patch said Route 166 at Route 37 had several inches of water on the road as well.

South Toms River police said roads were flooded there as well; Flint Road was closed and impassable because of the flooding.
The First Energy outage map showed more than 4,200 homes and businesses without electric service, including more than 2,300 in Toms River and 900 in Island Heights, due to downed power lines. More than 900 homes and businesses in Berkeley Township were affected as well.
