Radon Test Kits Available For Warren Residents

Radon is an odorless gas associated with around 22K lung cancer deaths in the U.S. annually. Here's how to get your test kit:

WARREN, NJ - A limited number of free radon test kits are available at the Warren Township Health Department, officials said.

Radon is an odorless gas associated with around 22,000 lung cancer deaths in the U.S. annually, according to a news release from township officials. Radon gas moves up through the soil and enters homes through cracks in foundation and openings around pumps, pipes and drains. The gas is known to occur in higher concentrations in certain areas of the state, including Somerset County, officials added.

"To reduce the risk of exposure to radon gas, residents are urged to test their homes," the release reads. "Even if your neighbor’s home is not affected by radon gas, it does not mean that your home is in an acceptable range. If a radon test indicates a radon problem, radon mitigation systems can be installed at a cost similar to other home repairs, reducing exposures and the risk of lung cancer."

Smokers and those exposed to second-hand smoke are at an increased risk of developing lung cancer, officials said.

"Radon does not cause any immediate symptoms, such as asthma or respiratory problems, so testing for radon is the only way to know if a home has elevated radon levels," the township added."
