Some Say 'Puppy Resort' Plan Stinks

Planning Board reviewing plan to convert old post office building to a 'luxury resort' for pooches.

The Warren Zoning Board is reviewing plans for a proposed "luxury resort" for dogs on Washington Valley Road, a plan some say just stinks.

The proposal would adopt the old post office building for use as the KP Resort, Daycare and Luxury Hotel, providing accommodations for dogs. The plan seeks approval for variances on existing scenarios at the site, including too few parking spaces, too narrow of a driveway, and to little set-back from the road, as required by current zoning.

The use is not permitted in the current zone, either, so the board will need to approve the use before the project can move forward.

The Zoning Board will continue its review of the plan at its July 1 meeting, when board members may hear from Mat Clark, who opposes the project.

Clark says the plans to house up to 80 dogs behind the A&P Grocery store and Pheasant Run Shopping Center is not a suitable choice. He points to the estimated 600 gallons of waste water expected daily per day, some of which he said is planned to be emptied into the Middle Brook Creek daily.

"Noise—non-stop barking, dogs outside all day; odor—feces stored in dumpster in front of building," Clark said.
