Threat Of Severe Storms Cancels Warren Afterschool Activities

A severe afternoon thunderstorm is predicted to impact the area bringing large hail, damaging wind, a and heavy rain.

WARREN, NJ — A threat of a severe thunderstorm — which could bring large hail, damaging winds, and heavy rain — has caused Warren schools to cancel afternoon activities Monday.

"Due to the anticipated severe weather forecast for this afternoon, all afterschool and evening activities are canceled for today, May 16, 2022. The AlphaBEST after-school program will run as usual," the district said in an announcement.

Hillsborough Township Schools and Montgomery Township School District announced early dismissal.

Immaculate Conception School in Somerville also announced cancellations for all after-school activities, including CARES for Monday.

A severe thunderstorm watch was also issued for Somerset County on Monday until 8 p.m.

Here is a look at the upcoming forecast, according to National Weather Service:

Monday Afternoon: Showers and thunderstorms likely, then showers and possibly a thunderstorm after 4 p.m. Some storms could be severe, with large hail, damaging winds, and heavy rain. High near 78. South wind around 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80 percent. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Monday Night: Showers and thunderstorms, mainly before 8 p.m. Some of the storms could be severe. Low around 55. West wind 5 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80 percent. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.
