WARREN, NJ - Warren Township officials are warning residents to monitor emails purportedly sent from local officials after Warren committeeman Victor Sordillo was targeted by an email phishing impersonation scam.

Several Warren Township employees received emails from the address “mayor2036@gmail.com,” with the sender identifying themselves as Vic Sordillo, on Jan. 11, municipal officials said in a statement.

“If you receive an email from this address, do not respond, it is a scam and an impersonation of a government official,” the statement read.

Phishing scams are defined as schemes in which fraudulent emails purporting to be from reputable sources are sent in order for recipients to disclose personal information such as credit card, bank or password information.

Warren Township police are currently investigating the incident and will be pursuing criminal charges, township officials added.

“Unfortunately these phishing email scams are all too common and by releasing this information we hope that the residents of Warren do not fall prey to such scams,” officials said.
