Alleged Purse-Snatching Probed in Watchung

Police said a woman reported a man stealing her purse while she was putting groceries in her car at Shop Rite.

Watchung police are investigating an alleged purse-snatching in the Shop Rite parking lot on Nov. 29.

An 88-year-old Mountainside woman called police to say her purse had been stolen around 12:30 p.m. that day in the Route 202 store's parking lot, according to a press release prepared by Sgt. Robert Faust. The woman told police she was putting her groceries in her car when a black male allegedly stole her purse and fled the scene on foot.

The value of the purse and stolen items is $50, the press release said.
