Eagle Scout Project Honors Fallen Watchung Officer With Special Dedication

Eagle Scout Charles Ford has chosen to honor the memory of Officer Matthew J. Melchionda, who was killed in the line of duty in March 2006.

WATCHUNG, NJ — On Thursday, June 19, at 11 a.m., the Watchung Police Department will host a special dedication ceremony at Police Headquarters, recognizing the Eagle Scout project of local Scout Charles Ford.

As part of his path to earning the rank of Eagle Scout, Charles has chosen to honor the memory of Officer Matthew J. Melchionda, who was tragically killed in the line of duty on March 8, 2006.

Charles's project includes the installation of a handcrafted "Honor Chair" made by the organization Saving A Hero’s Place.

The chair will be permanently displayed inside Watchung Police Headquarters as a symbolic reminder of Officer Matthew Melchionda’s service and sacrifice — a seat that will always remain open in honor of the fallen.

In addition to the chair dedication, Charles has revitalized the front grounds of our headquarters, including the area surrounding the monument dedicated to Officer Matthew Melchionda. His efforts have brought new life and respect to a space that holds deep meaning for our department.

Charles Ford will also say a few words at the event to share the inspiration behind his project and what it means to him.

All are welcome to attend the dedication ceremony on June 19 at 11 a.m. at the Watchung Police Headquarters.
