'Laughter And Happiness': Fundraiser Supports Daughters Of NJ Truck Driver Killed In Crash

Luis "Papo" Santiago of Linden is survived by his three daughters, who say they will "continue to shed light to how amazing he was to us."

CLIFTON, NJ — The daughters of a New Jersey truck driver, who died in a fiery crash on Route 3, are remembering him as a devoted dad and grandfather who "always prioritized time with his family."

The crash and subsequent explosion on the morning of July 22 killed 55-year-old Luis "Papo" Santiago of Linden, who was driving a tractor-trailer owned by a chemical distribution business. Officials said that the truck "clipped" a New Jersey Transit bus before smashing into a sound barrier and then bursting into flames.

A GoFundMe to support his daughters Meghan, Mariellis, and Marissa has raised more than $22,000, as of 11:30 a.m. on Aug. 6.

"His life was a blend of dedication on the road and unwavering love for his family and friends," Meghan wrote on the fundraising page.

Santiago had more than 35 years of experience as a truck operator, where he "navigated countless miles with a work ethic that earned him the respect of his colleagues," she said.

And when he wasn't behind the wheel, Santiago cherished his time with his daughters and two grandchildren, and loved watching his favorite football team — the San Francisco 49ers — with a crisp, cold Pepsi in hand.

"These simple pleasures brought him great happiness and were a big part of who he was," Meghan said.

"His role as a 'papa' of two beautiful grandchildren was equally remarkable, as he delighted in spending time with them and creating cherished memories," her remembrance continued. "Whether it was enjoying a day at the park, experiencing the fun of a carnival, or sharing a meal at our favorite spot, he always made sure the time spent together was filled with laughter and happiness."

She said that her father also loved playing dominoes, and joking around with his coworkers and loved ones.

"His death has left a significant void, felt profoundly by his family and friends," Meghan wrote. "Yet, his legacy of dedication, kindness, and the many treasured moments with his loved ones will be remembered and cherished forever."

Funeral services for Santiago have not yet been scheduled; his daughters said on Aug. 4 that his remains "will be with us soon."

"We will continue to shed light to how amazing he was to us," said Meghan, Mariellis, and Marissa in that update.

Donations to the family will help pay for a memorial services, and other costs that have come up in the wake of their tragedy. You may view the GoFundMe page here.

As of press time, officials had not released more details about the cause of the crash.
