Eight people have died at a nursing home in New Jersey due to the coronavirus, officials announced on Monday.

WANAQUE – Eight people have died at a nursing home in New Jersey due to the coronavirus, officials announced on Monday.
Eight people at the Lakeland Nursing Home on Fifth Avenue, in the Haskell section of Wanaque, died and many others were infected, according to Wanaque Mayor Dan Mahler.
Most of the tragic circumstances occurred within the past few days. The infected people were being treated on site and the facility is on lockdown, and won't be accepting additional patients for the foreseeable future, the mayor said.

Ten other people were infected at another nursing home in the same town, but no deaths have been reported.
"These outbreaks at the nursing homes were likely the result of one person at each facility who was unknowingly exposed to the COVID-19 virus either visiting a patient or going to work," the mayor said.

Wanaque had a total of 26 cases and no deaths reported on Sunday, but "we now know that this number is understated."
