WAYNE, NJ — Township residents can celebrate the 1970 "Boys of Summer," and also the 60th anniversary of the Wayne Museum, at a special event on Saturday.

The museum (533 Berdan Avenue) is celebrating its 60th official birthday, and Wayne Little League, with free admission on Saturday from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. A temporary exhibit, highlighting the 1970 Little League championship team, opened on June 8 and residents can check it out while browsing the museum and enjoying light refreshments.

Local history buffs may know that the Van Riper-Hopper House —which was dedicated as the Wayne Museum in 1964 — has a much longer history.

Built in 1786 by Uriah Van Riper, the house (built on an original 145-acre plot bought by Richard Van Riper), stayed in the family for ages. In 1872 Uriah’s great-granddaughter, Mary Ann Riper, married Andrew Hopper.

Also unique about the house is that its Dutch Colonial Architecture is exclusive to the former ‘New Netherland’ area (New Jersey, New York, Delaware and Connecticut).
