First Ramadan Lighting Scheduled In Wayne To Mark Islam Holy Month

Township officials and the local Muslim community will celebrate Ramadan with a lantern lighting, music, and goodies.

WAYNE, NJ — As the holy month of Ramadan approaches for Muslims around the world, Wayne Township is preparing to hold its first-ever community celebration for the holiday.

Township officials and the Wayne Muslim Community will gather on Friday for a Ramadan Hilal Lighting — "Hilal" referring to the appearance of the crescent moon, which marks a new month in the Islamic calendar.

Enjoy music, cultural desserts, goodie bags, and more on Friday, March 8 beginning at 5:30 p.m., at Wayne Town Hall (475 Valley Road, Wayne).

The monthlong observance of Ramadan is a time of fasting, introspection and prayer observed by 1.8 billion Muslims worldwide. It begins on the morning of Sunday, March 10 and runs through Tuesday, April 9 this year.
