Lakeland High School Grieving After 2 Ex-Students Die In Crash

PASSAIC COUNTY, NJ — The greater Lakeland Regional High School community is grieving following the deaths of two ex-students who died in a car crash Wednesday afternoon.

The school community is "deeply saddened" over the teenagers' deaths, said Superintendent Hugh Beattie.

"The thoughts of the entire Lakeland community are with the families at the very difficult time," Beattie said.

The school's grief counseling team is available for students and faculty members if anyone needs to talk about the tragedy, Beattie said.

One victim was Victor Weinpel, 19, Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia Valdes said Wednesday night.

Weinpel was a member of the school's class of 2017 and ran track when at Lakeland Regional, Beattie said. His track coach was not immediately available for comment.

The other victim attended Lakeland Regional his freshman year, Beattie said.

Weinpel and other boy were killed after the 1999 Toyota Corolla hit a Chevy van head on Greenwood Lake Turnpike, Valdes said. (See related: Victims Of Fatal Ringwood Crash ID'd: Prosecutor)
