Paterson Tow Truck Operator Struck, Killed While Loading Vehicle Onto Truck

Officials said the tow truck driver died at the scene; the other driver was hospitalized after their vehicle flipped over from the impact.

PATERSON, NJ — Officials are investigating after a tow truck driver was struck and killed Sunday morning along a highway in Paterson.

According to authorities, the 64-year-old man was in the southbound lanes of Route 19 loading a disabled vehicle onto his truck, when another driver hit him.

The tow truck driver has been identified as Manuel Perez of Paterson. Rob Rowan, spokesman for the Paterson Police Department, said Perez was pronounced dead at the scene.

The other vehicle flipped over after hitting Perez, and first responders took the driver to St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center with unspecified injuries, Rowan added.

Paterson Police will investigate the incident, which happened shortly before 11 a.m. Sunday near the Valley Road exit.
