Passaic River Poses Flooding Threat In Wayne, Forecasters Say

Breaking: Low-lying areas of the township are forecast to flood this weekend.

WAYNE, NJ — The Passaic River is at flood stage and is forecast to rise higher this weekend.

The river was at 19 feet at the Pine Brook flood gauge in Montville as of Friday morning. Minor flood stage for the river is 19 feet.

Rain is forecast to fall in North Jersey Friday night, Saturday, and Saturday night. The river will crest at 19.2 feet by early Sunday morning, and maybe higher, the National Weather Service is forecasting. The NWS issued a flood warning for the area Friday morning.

Low-lying areas of town, including Two Bridges Road and the Hoffman Grove section, are often the worse-flooded parts of town.

The National Weather Service's forecast for Wayne this weekend is:

Tonight
Rain, mainly after 9 p.m. Low around 33. Light and variable wind. Chance of precipitation is 80 percent. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Saturday
Rain, high near 45. Northeast wind 7 to 9 miles per hour. Chance of precipitation is 80 percent. New precipitation amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.

Saturday night
A 30 percent chance of rain before 9pm. Cloudy, then gradually becoming partly cloudy, with a low around 34. Northwest wind around 8 miles per hour

Sunday
Sunny, with a high near 44. Northwest wind 8 to 15 miles per hour.
