Preakness Healthcare Center Reports 15th Coronavirus Death

WAYNE, NJ — Inside Preakness Healthcare Center in Wayne, 15 residents have died of the new coronavirus, the long-term care facility announced Tuesday in a press release.

The nursing home itself reported 53 staff members had tested positive for the virus. As of Tuesday, 29 of them had returned to work.

On Wednesday, the New Jersey Department of Health reported the nursing home had 76 positive cases of the virus.

Preakness, owned and operated by the Passaic County Board of Chosen Freeholders, houses 406 beds for its residents. According to a release, the home is divided into 10 resident unites.

Of those residents, three are on quarantine and and three were on precautionary isolation.

According to the release, two residents are currently hospitalized as a result of the virus. When residents return from a hospital visit, they are isolated on a separate wing of a residential unit for approximately 14 days, Preakness said.

Passaic County reports 24 long-term care facilities in the county have reported outbreaks of the new coronavirus. Between those facilities, 929 people have tested positive for the virus, and 175 people have died.

According to NJDOH, the number of deaths reported in long-term care facilities includes all deaths reported by long-term care facilities, but they might not all be laboratory-confirmed.
