The victims were outside of their vehicle, which had just been in another crash when a vehicle hit them: Police.

PASSAIC COUNTY, NJ — Authorities have identified the two people killed in a motor vehicle crash on Interstate 80 Sunday.
Juan Martinez and Sabrina Acosta, both 22, of Bergenfield, were killed while they were outside of their Toyota Camry on I-80 near exit 58 in Paterson, said State Police Trooper Alejandro Goez.
The victims were involved in an earlier accident on the highway just before they died, Goez said. They were outside of their disabled vehicle when a Hyundai struck the concrete barrier, flipped over, and then hit Martinez and Acosta, police said. The Camry was disabled in the left-hand lane after it earlier hit the concrete barrier and the victims got out of the car, Goez said.
The crash occurred at 11:15 a.m. on the westbound side of the highway, Goez said.

The driver of the Hyundai, Leah Kehoe, 34, of Rockaway, suffered non-life threatening injuries and was taken to St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center, Goez said.
Martinez and Acosta were 2015 graduates of Bergenfield High School, Daily Voice reported. They were on the highway because Acosta was venturing out to start a new chapter in her life, her family said.
Martinez was "an amazing person with a huge heart that always put others before himself," Nicole Ospina-Barragan told Daily Voice.
Funeral information for either Martinez or Acosta was not available.
Correction: An earlier version of this story reported that Acosta was homeless. She was not, her family said.
