WAYNE, NJ — A suspected burglar was found and captured last week after evading authorities for several weeks, the Wayne Police Department announced.

Robert Gorrie, 61, is believed by police to be responsible for a string of burglaries at several local businesses throughout Wayne Township. The victimized businesses were robbed during overnight hours, with their front windows smashed and cash missing the next morning, according to authorities.

The burglaries took place earlier this year, and a Wayne Police investigation led to Gorrie being the primary suspect. According to officials, however, Gorrie was nowhere to be found when police looked for him at his last known address in Wayne.

The police sought the public’s help in locating Gorrie, releasing a description and hoping anybody with information on his whereabouts would assist. Despite some tips from the public, authorities had no luck finding Gorrie, police said.

Wayne Township detectives summarized that Gorrie was no longer in the area, and “initiated various investigative techniques to expand the search.”

Last week, information surfaced that suggested Gorrie may have been hiding in Hudson County. Wayne officials collaborated with the Jersey City Police Department to continue the search.

Gorrie was soon found fast asleep in an abandoned bus along the railroad tracks at the Jersey City/Bayonne border, police said. He was taken into custody by Wayne detectives.

Gorrie received several counts of burglary and theft, and is being held in the Passaic County Jail awaiting court proceedings.
