Gabriella Handal started the Sunshine Collection in 2009 at the age of twelve to benefit patients in the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Division of St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital. Handal’s goal for the Sunshine Collection has been to “brighten up” the lives of local children who suffer from cancer and other life-threatening diseases.

“After all of the treatments and injections that these children have to endure, simply choosing their own fun Band-Aids and playing or coloring helps to take their mind off of their difficult situation,” Handal told Passaic Valley Today.

The charity has provided toys, gift cards, and arts and craft supplies to the Saint Joseph’s patientd. According to Handal, the Sunshine Collection charity has “grown to incorporating Sunshine Wishes, Sunshine Tables & Events, and Sunshine Christmas Parties with the support of over fifty businesses, organizations and schools”.

This summer, Handal contacted Five Below, which has two stores in Wayne, to participate in her fundraising by donating profits toward the charity. Both stores have agreed to participate during the back-to-school shopping season. However, Handal would like to remind those wishing to donate through shopping at the stores that Sunshine Collection will only receive donations if shoppers print and bring in the charity’s flyers when making their purchase.
