Wayne Initiates Radon Awareness Program
Free radon testing kits are available from the township.
WAYNE, NJ — The township is participating in a special radon awareness program initiated by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection.
The township has a limited number of free radon test kits available to residents on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Radon is a naturally-occurring radioactive gas found in the soil and rocks. It moves up through the soil and finds its way into homes through cracks in a home's foundation, or around sump pumps, pipes, and drains.

High radon levels have been associated with a greater risk of lung cancer.
"We are pleased to cooperate with the DEP in this program to ensure that all residents are aware of the need to test homes and reduce radon levels where necessary," Mayor Chris Vergano said. "Testing is the only way to know if you and your family are at risk for radon. Radon testing is easy and problems can be fixed."
