Wayne Voters Reject School Bond Issue, Unofficial Results Show

Voters cast their ballots Tuesday for a $169.8 million referendum. Take a look at the latest tally:

WAYNE, NJ —Wayne Township voters have rejected a proposal that would see the school district issue $169.8 million in bonds for building improvements, unofficial results show.

Residents headed to the polls Tuesday to vote on a bond issuance that would raise taxes about $370 annually for homes assessed at the township average of $229,473, said school officials. The term of the bond would be 25 years.

With all precincts reporting on Tuesday night, about 2,000 more people voted against the measure than for it.

District officials said the 62 projects outlined in the proposal are designed to bolster security, promote energy conservation, and accommodate the expected increase in enrollment. The Board of Education has said that they have been diligently monitoring an anticipated rise in enrollment for years, which would require an expansion of the Preakness Early Childhood Center.
