WAYNE, NJ — The National Association of Broadcasters has named the student-produced FM station at Wayne's William Paterson University the "College Radio Station of the Year" once again.

The team at WPSC-FM 88.7, also known as Brave New Radio, learned of their win during the NAB's annual Marconi Radio Awards in New York last week. These prestigious awards were established in 1989 and are named after Nobel Prize winner Guglielmo Marconi, an inventor known for developing the first form of wireless radio communication.

Station general manager Rob Taylor said it was exciting to see the positive response to WPSC's win from "the biggest and best in the radio industry who were in attendance at the event."

“Our students' dedication to quality on-air programming and their achievements in serving the local community have been recognized through winning the highest honor in radio,” he said.

A committee of broadcasters selected the finalists, and the NAB Marconi Radio Awards Selection Academy voted on the winners.

WPSC-FM last won a Marconi Award in 2021, the same year they rebranded their music format to focus on underground and alternative hip-hop artists. The station, which is available throughout North Jersey and parts of New York City, also took home the award for "Non-Commercial Station of the Year" in 2018.

Junior Bella Rocha and sophomore Daniel Karp, the co-programming directors at WPSC, delivered acceptance speeches on behalf of their fellow students during the ceremony.

"Winning a Marconi Award is an achievement that would not have been possible without the amazing directors at Brave New Radio," Rocha said. "I am incredibly blessed to have a team of strong leaders and a family I will cherish forever."

Karp said that winning the award "signifies the hard work, dedication, and family at our radio station."

“I'm so proud of everyone at our radio station for bringing this award home," he said.

On WPSC-FM, there are also designated times for classic and alternative rock music, as well as student-produced talk shows, news and sports reports, and a Music Biz 101 show. The station, which is primarily made up of student broadcasters, began in 1988 and is the founding station of World College Radio Day.

WPSC is also the first radio station to broadcast live from the Marconi Museum, where the wireless radio was invented, in Bologna, Italy.
