Police Increase Presence In West Windsor After California Lunar New Year Shooting

Despite no threat to the community, the police chief asked residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to authorities.

WEST WINDSOR, NJ — The local police department said it has increased its presence across the community following the mass shooting in California during a Lunar New Year celebration.

“We have already increased awareness to all our patrols and have additional resources at the ready should anything suspicious come across our county, state, or international networks. In addition, I have been on the phone with the County Prosecutor and many of the local county chiefs to ensure resources are available if needed,” Police Chief Robert Garofalo said in a statement.

“Unfortunately, this is not the first incident like this; sadly, it won't be the last. One thing is for sure, as I have said before and will continue to say, we train long and hard for these exact situations, and while we train, we stand side by side with all our friends and partners. In times of crisis, we will stand in front.”

Despite no threat to the community, Garofalo asked residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to authorities. He said the police department will not be letting their guard down.

“Please don't hesitate to call 911 if you see anything suspicious or concerning,” Garfalo said.

Almost 12 hours after the shooting, officers in Torrance pulled up behind the suspect's van at about 10:20 a.m., as he drove into the parking lot of a shopping center. As officers exited their vehicle, they heard a gunshot coming from inside the van, Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said. Police are still not clear on the motive.
