Standing Up for Our Schools: Rejecting Right-Wing Attacks on Public Education

We must stand together and reject this cynical attempt to turn our classrooms into battlegrounds for political gain and profit.

Our community is under attack. In recent weeks, a billionaire-funded organization called Wake Up Call NJ has launched a coordinated, multimillion-dollar campaign to smear our schools and undermine public confidence in public education. They describe themselves as “nonpartisan” and “nonprofit,” but let us be clear: that is a political talking point, not the truth.

This campaign is not about helping children. It is about politics, profit, and power. It is part of a national effort by right-wing donors and operatives to defund public education, replace it with privatized alternatives that enrich the few, and roll back inclusive, culturally responsive curricula that reflect the diversity of our students and our community.

Their messaging is deliberately misleading and deeply insulting. They make outrageous claims about our students’ futures based on a single test score. They reduce children to data points and attack our teachers and families. And they ignore the facts.
