Buildings Damaged, Trees Down After Storm Hits West Windsor

Fire Department Stations 43 & 44 are going door-to-door to check on affected residences.

WEST WINDSOR, NJ — Significant damage was reported to a portions of West Windsor after severe thunderstorm hit the area earlier this evening.

The National Weather Service issued a tornado warning in Mercer County until 4:15 p.m.

The West Windsor Police Department received various calls from residents who reported trees falling on homes and downed power lines. No injuries were reported.

The West Windsor Emergency Operations Center has been opened. Police Chief Garofalo, command staff, and West Windsor Department of Fire & Emergency Services had a meeting. Stations 43 & 44 have been going door to door to check on affected residences.

Officers have been assisting the community at large with the trees down, road closures, power lines down.

The Superintendent of West Windsor-Plainsboro Regional Schools and police Chief are assessing affected school buildings.

Damage assessments are currently ongoing. PSEG has staff on the scene and JCPL has been contacted.

The West Windsor Department of Public Works are clearing the roads of downed trees. The Developments of Dutch Neck Estates (southern portion) and Jefferson Park have seen extensive activity from the event.

At 3:40 p.m., a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was located over Edinburg, or 7 miles east of Trenton, moving east at 45 mph, according to the NWS.

West Windsor Police asked residents to take cover and move to a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building.

The National Weather Service is yet to confirm if a tornado touched down in Mercer County.
