Camden County Man Arrested in Alleged Attack on DRPA Officer

Kelvin Nuñez allegedly punched DRPA Officer Joe McCalla in the face in an unprovoked assault on Aug. 17.

An Oaklyn man was arrested Friday in connection with an unprovoked attack on a Delaware River Port Authority (DRPA) officer last month, Camden County Prosecutor Warren Faulk announced Monday.

Kelvin Nuñez, 27, of the 100 block of Cooper Avenue, attacked DRPA Officer Joe McCalla, who was sitting in a marked patrol car near the Ferry Avenue PATCO stop on Aug. 17, Faulk said.

Nuñez, who had a knife in his hand, threw a punch through the open window of the patrol car, hitting McCalla in the face, Faulk said. McCalla wasn’t cut by the blade, but was cut, bruised and suffered damage to his right eye, Faulk said.

McCalla unsuccessfully tried to chase down Nuñez following the alleged assault.

A Woodlynne Police sergeant recognized Nuñez after seeing video of the suspect released by the prosecutor’s office, Faulk said, and notified the Camden County Police Department.
