Drunk Driver With No License Leaves Man Critical After Running Stop Sign, NJ Police Say

The suspect was also driving with a suspended license, authorities said.

FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP, NJ — A man faces charges after getting into a crash while intoxicated, leaving another driver in critical condition Sunday afternoon in Gloucester County, authorities said.

The suspect, David Hewitt, ran a stop sign and struck another vehicle at 12:56 p.m. in Franklin Township, police said.

The other vehicle overturned, entrapping the driver at the crash scene on Swedesboro and Little Mill roads, officials said. Firefighters freed the victim — a 34-year-old Clayton man — who was brought to Cooper University Hospital in Camden.

The victim was hospitalized in critical but stable condition, police said.

Hewitt, 46, of Monroeville, showed signs of intoxication at the scene, police said. He was brought to a Inspira Medical Center Mullica Hill.

A judge authorized a search warrant for a blood sample to test Hewitt for intoxicants.

Hewitt was charged with assault by auto, driving while intoxicated, driving while suspended, and additional motor-vehicle violations. Once released from the hospital, he'll be placed in the Salem County Correctional Facility, which provides jailing services for Gloucester County.

Online court records did not list an attorney for Hewitt on Monday.
