Man Linked To Halloween 'Terrorist' Plot Was A South Jersey College Student

The suspect, a university freshman, is 1 of 8 suspects who has been arrested and accused by federal authorities of plotting the attack.

GLASSBORO, NJ — One of the suspects accused of plotting a "terrorist" attack in Michigan over Halloween was a South Jersey college student, officials said.

Tomas Kaan Jimenez-Guzel, 19, is one of several people accused of plotting the attack near Detroit, which was thwarted last week, according to federal prosecutors.

Jimenez-Guzel is a freshman at Rowan University, who had been taking classes this semester. He is in federal custody.

"The FBI notified University officials that its agents were investigating a student of interest prior to the arrest," Rowan President Ali A. Houshmand wrote in a letter to the university community. "At no time during the investigation was there ever a threat to the University community."

The university has been cooperating with law enforcement, but Houshmand said he couldn't comment on any details of the federal investigation.

Jimenez-Guzel and co-defendant Milo Sedarat — both 19-year-old Montclair residents — were taken into custody following a joint investigation by the NYPD’s Intelligence Bureau and the FBI this week. Jimenez-Guzel was arrested at a food court at Newark Airport on Tuesday morning.

So far, eight people have been arrested in connection with the alleged planned attack. Federal authorities have accused suspects of buying weapons and ammunition and scouting gay bars and an amusement park for a possible attack, according to NBC News.
