Man Struck, Critically Injured While Picking Up Grill That Fell On South Jersey Road: Cops

A grill fell out the rear of a pickup truck. A man who exited the vehicle was struck while retrieving it and clearing debris, police said.

MANTUA, NJ — A man was struck and critically injured while retrieving belongings that fell out of a pickup truck Monday night in Gloucester County, authorities said.

An oncoming vehicle struck the man just after 7:30 p.m. at the intersection of Main Street and Lambs Road in Mantua, police said. He was brought to Cooper University Hospital with life-threatening injuries and was listed in critical but stable condition as of noon Tuesday.

A grill fell out the rear of a Ford Ranger pickup truck that was traveling north on Main Road, police said. Two men exited the vehicle to retrieve it.

As they began clearing debris from the roadway, a Ram 1500 pickup truck struck one of the men, authorities said. The Ram was also traveling north on Main Street.

Police did not release identifying information for anyone involved on Tuesday.

The roadway was closed for about two hours after the crash, which remains under investigation.
