South Jersey Wildfire Threatened 15 Structures, Now Contained

The fire spanned 65 acres at the popular hunting spot.

ALLOWAY, NJ — A forest fire at a Salem County hunting site that threatened several structures and spanned 65 acres has been completely contained, state forest-fire officials said Friday morning.

The fire at Thundergut Pond Wildlife Management Area in Alloway, also known as the former Holly Hills Golf Course, was 0 percent contained and threatened 15 buildings, according to a 6 p.m. update from the New Jersey Forest Fire Service.

But the blaze only threatened the structures "for a short time," the state agency said. The fire reached 100 percent containment as of 11 p.m. Thursday.

The Forest Fire Service said it doesn't expect to send any further updates on the South Jersey fire.

Thundergut Pond Wildlife Management Area is a popular hunting spot spanning roughly 2,500 acres. There were no reported evacuations or road closures.

"Forest Fire Service staff will remain on scene and continue to monitor control lines and address areas of concern until significant precipitation occurs to ensure public safety," the agency said.
