Suspect Gets Away After Miles-Long Police Chase In SUV Stolen From West Deptford: Cops

Police say they pursued the vehicle from Washington Township to Camden.

WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP, NJ — The driver of an SUV stolen from West Deptford got away after a police chase stretched from Washington Township to Camden early Friday, authorities said.

A black BMW X3 was reported stolen out of West Deptford around 4 a.m. Tuesday. An officer saw the SUV enter Washington Township just before 2 a.m. Friday and tried to stop the vehicle.

The driver sped away onto Route 42 southbound, initiating a pursuit by Washington Township Police. The suspect then entered the Atlantic City Expressway southbound, traveled several miles, crossed the median, and began traveling northbound back toward Route 42, police said.

State Police, Camden County Police and Delaware River Port Authority Police were notified and assisted during the pursuit.

The vehicle exited Route 130 northbound and entered Camden at Exit 1D, police said. They continued through multiple city streets.

Police cut off the pursuit around Carl Miller Boulevard an Leon Huff Way in Camden, where the driver turned the wrong way down a one-way street and nearly struck another car head-on, authorities said.

It's unclear where the drive went thereafter.

No injuries were reported, and the investigation remains ongoing.

West Deptford Police Chief Michael Franks recently warned residents about a "recent uptick" in vehicle thefts.

"We assure our residents that our officers are doing everything they can to remain proactive and vigilant during these times," Franks said. "The safety and security of our residents will continue to remain our number one priority."
