West Deptford police were called to a gas station for a report of two intoxicated men, according to the Gloucester County Prosecutor's Office. The men were inside a vehicle leaving the gas station when officers arrived.

The suspect driver — later identified as Hall — sped away when an officer flashed their emergency lights to pull him over. Hall then crossed onto the wrong side of the road and struck another vehicle, authorities said.

The driver of the other vehicle died, and their passenger suffered a leg fracture, authorities said. Hall also sustained serious injuries, while his passenger dislocated his hip.

Authorities have not confirmed whether they think Hall was intoxicated during the incident.

Hall is detained at the Salem County Correctional Facility, which provides jailing services for Gloucester County. His attorney information wasn't available in online court records on Wednesday.

Days before the fatal crash, Hall was ticketed in a separate incident for failing to obey a traffic signal, according to court records.

Here's what we know:

Uber Driver IDed As Victim

The victim who died in the crash was driving for Uber, according to a GoFundMe supporting the rear-seat passenger who was injured.

Julie Hacker says her daughter, Gianna, was riding in the Uber when she was severely injured in the crash. The GoFundMe supports Gianna's medical treatment and day-to-day living expenses.

"The driver of the Uber lost their life," Hacker said. "Gianna, thankfully alive, suffered a broken femur and tibia, requiring surgery and facing months of recovery ahead."

The deceased driver's name has not been released as of this writing.

Prior Driving Violations

Hall was also recently ticketed while driving in Burlington County, according to court records.

He was pulled over around 11 a.m. Oct. 29 in Mansfield. He was issued tickets for two violations:

  • failure to obey traffic signs and signals
  • driving with a windshield that has an obstructed view or isn't equipped with cleaners.

Separate Investigation Into Police

The Gloucester County Prosecutor's Office is leading the criminal investigation into Hall. Meanwhile, the state Attorney General's Office is examining the actions of law enforcement.

The state agency investigates all deadly incidents that occur during encounters with law enforcement. The West Deptford crash falls under that purview, since Hall was fleeing police, authorities said.

Once the investigation is complete, the findings will be presented to a grand jury to determine whether to indict any officers involved.

The AG's Office has not publicly identified the officer(s) involved in the West Deptford incident.
