Code Blue Weather Emergency For Union County: What To Know
A code blue will be in effect Tuesday and Wednesday, police said. Here's how to keep your family, pets and neighbors safe.
WESTFIELD, NJ - A Code Blue Weather Emergency is in effect for Union County through Wednesday night as a nor'easter is set to begin moving through the region, officials said.
According to the National Weather Service, temperatures are anticipated to linger in the mid-30s starting on Tuesday, plummeting into the low 30s on Wednesday. The code blue will be in effect from 7 p.m. on Tuesday to 7 a.m. on Wednesday. Snow will likely fall along the I-80 corridor in New Jersey from Monday until “at least Tuesday morning,” per the National Weather Service, but a heavier band of snow “will pivot southward toward the I-78 corridor Monday night and Tuesday. In Union County, a code blue declaration is issued when dangerously cold weather threatens individuals or families without shelter. The county provides short-term sheltering in clean, safe locations during the declaration. Individuals and families sheltered during a Code Blue must be screened and referred by the Union County Division of Social Services.

All after-hours referrals (after 3:30 p.m.) to county offices should be directed to the Statewide Homeless Hotline by dialing 211 or 1-877-652-1148. To report someone in need of shelter, call your local police department.
