'A Simple Guy At Heart': Westfield Superintendent Honored As NJ's Best
Dr. Raymond Gonzalez now represents New Jersey in a nationwide competition.

WESTFIELD, NJ — Dr. Raymond Gonzalez was named New Jersey's 2026 Superintendent of the Year by the New Jersey Association of School Administrators (NASA).
The organization made the announcement on Tuesday after calling Gonzalez a "a leader whose strategic vision and dedication continue to move public education forward in New Jersey."
For Gonzalez, it's the growth on an individual level that he gets to watch develop over time, and the confidence he watches students build in themselves that makes it all worth it.

"Seeing them discover their passions, overcome challenges, and realize their potential, both in and out of the classroom, is incredibly rewarding," said Gonzalez. "Our staff, students, and families have shown me that progress happens when people feel seen, supported, and inspired."
This year's winner was chosen by a group of past NJASA Presidents and former Regional Superintendents of the Year. The Superintendent of the Year is recognized as someone who demonstrates vision, creativity, and compassion in leadership that advances students in the district.

Gonzalez and Dr. John R. Giacchi of Franklin Borough School District were both honored with their regional winner awards in October as the two state finalists.
Gonzalez joined Westfield Public Schools in August 2021. He previously served as Superintendent of the Westwood Regional School District, Superintendent in Wayne Township, and Interim Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent of Hackensack Public Schools.
"I've been amazed at how this community comes together to support our schools," he added. "There's a spirit of collaboration that runs deep from parent organizations and local businesses to our municipal and philanthropic partners...that level of care and commitment is what makes Westfield such a special place to live, work, and lead."
In his time since joining the Westfield inner workings, the husband and father of three has taken any chance he had to get out and enjoy what the Town has to offer.
"Lately, I've been stopping by 787 Coffee for a coquito latte, and Broadway Hot & Honey Chicken for some amazing tenders," he added. "Exploring new spots downtown is part of what makes working here so enjoyable."
Gonzalez said he is just "a simple guy at heart" who loves spending time with his family outside of work. Day-to-day, he tries to live his life by constantly reminding himself that "time feels more precious as life gets busier."
Gonzalez now goes on to represent the state as a candidate in the nationwide School Superintendents Association competition, an honor he does not take lightly.
"Gratitude is the word that keeps coming to mind," he said. "I'm deeply thankful for the colleagues, teams, Boards of Education, and communities I've had the privilege to serve alongside. Their trust, encouragement, and belief in me have made all the difference."
The National Superintendent of the Year will be announced at the group's Conference on Education in February 2026.
