More than 3,000 storm drains are located throughout Westfield. Residents are encouraged to help clear debris from the drains this weekend.

WESTFIELD, NJ — In an effort to prevent trash and other waste from getting inside storm drains, Westfield is inviting residents to take part in a town-wide storm drain clean-up day.

The volunteer activity is set for Sunday, Nov. 6 — weather permitting — and hosted by the Westfield Green Team.

According to Mayor Shelley Brindle, more than 3,000 storm drains exist throughout Westfield.

"As we experience more severe storms, keeping our storm drains clear of debris and pollution is more important than ever," Brindle wrote.

While the town has a comprehensive storm drain maintenance system, which includes ongoing clearing efforts and street sweeping by the DPW, the Green Team said there are ways residents and business can help keep the local watershed clean.

According to the Green Team, cleaning storm drains is quick and easy to do with tools you already own, like a broom, rake, snow shovel or dustpan and a large bucket or yard waste bag.

Material collected can be dropped off at the Conservation Center from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. or at the South Avenue Train Station from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Residents are encouraged to clean drains around their neighborhood, school, park or a place of their choosing.

You can find the actual location of drains by searching on nj.adopt-a-drain.org and typing in the street address.

Online registration for this event is now open, and residents can choose from a number of locations to volunteer at.
