How Safe is Hillsdale? See Where It Ranks In New Jersey: Report

HILLSDALE, NJ — Hillsdale is the 14th safest city in the Garden State, according to a report by Safewise. It’s the third safest city in Bergen County, rising 12 spots from last year.

According to the numbers, there were 3.8 property crimes and zero violent crimes per 1,000 people in Hillsdale in 2022. The national averages are 19.6 property crimes and four violent crimes per 1,000, according to SafeWise.

The city is sandwiched between River Vale and Dumont, taking the 4th and 17th spots respectively. Of the top 50 safest cities in New Jersey, 13 are in Bergen County.

The report also compares perceived safety and actual safety of cities across the country. It found that 55 percent of New Jerseyites say their personal safety has been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic compared to 44 percent of Americans.

While violent and property crimes have decreased in the state, gun violence is a top concern for New Jersey residents. Almost a third named gun violence as their priority concern, which is higher than the U.S. average of 53 percent.

Safewise also collects information on median income, high school graduation rates, redlining practices, household access to high-speed internet, city budget allocations, and unemployment rates to create a cohesive picture.

When using terms like “dangerous” and “safe”, Safewise says they explicitly refer to Federal Bureau of Investigation’s crime data.
