Westwood Budget, Washington Twp. CVS, Patterson Street Apartment Hearings This Week

Here's a look at the week ahead in Westwood, Hillsdale and Washington Township.

The Westwood Council is scheduled to introduce their 2013 budget during their meeting Tuesday night. Officials previously said they were having difficulties with the budget because the borough's assessed value dropped by $17 million this year.

The Council is also scheduled to introduce an ordinance for an emergency appropriation of this year. The Westwood Council meets at 8 p.m. Tuesday in the Municipal Complex.

[Editor's note: The CVS application has been carried to a later meeting and will not be heard this week] The Washington Township Zoning Board is scheduled to continue hearing an application Tuesday for a proposed CVS at the corner of Pascack Road and Washington Avenue. At the previous hearing, Robert Oelenschlager testified about the proposed signs for the site — including 13 on the building and two freestanding — but said the plans would likely change after taking questions from the board.

The Department of Environmental Protection recently found that the property's owner had violated the state Flood Hazard Area Control Act. They have requested a 90-day extension to apply for the violations, including a retaining wall built near the stream behind the property. The Washington Township Zoning Board meets at 8 p.m. Tuesday in the Municipal Complex.

The Hillsdale Planning Board will begin hearing a plan for a 57-unit apartment building on Patterson Street during their meeting Tuesday. A developer has proposed to put the new three-story building on a wooded lot next to the PSE&G substation. The board was scheduled to begin hearing the application last month, but it was delayed by a procedural error. The Hillsdale Planning Board meets at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in Borough Hall.

Thursday, both the Hillsdale K-8 and Pascack Valley Regional School Districts will be presenting their proposed 2013 budgets to the public. If the budgets are approved as proposed, school taxes for the average Hillsdale homeowner will increase $99 for the borough district and $127 for the regional district. The Hillsdale Board of Education meets at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Anthony S. DeNorcha Adminsitration Building. The Pascack Valley Regional Board of Education meets at 7:30 p.m.

The Hillsdale Blockbuster will be closing its doors permanently Friday. Until then, the store is selling all of their merchandise and retail fixtures at a discounted rate. When they do close, the chain's closest location will be in Fair Lawn.
