Westwood Man, 80, Dies After Being Pulled From Pool

Just before 11:15 a.m., officers were called to a borough home on a report of an unresponsive man in a pool, police said.

WESTWOOD, NJ - An 80-year-old Westwood man who nearly drowned in a swimming pool Tuesday morning has died, according to authorities.

Just before 11:15 a.m., Officers Keith Bott, Brian Donaghy and Stephanie Laurent were called to a borough home on a report of an unresponsive man in a pool, Westwood Police Chief Michael Pontillo said.

Police, along with Westwood Volunteer Ambulance Corps and paramedics, conducted CPR on the man and he was taken to HUMC North at Pascack Valley Hospital, the chief said. Officers from Hillsdale and Washington Township assisted Westwood at the scene, and Emerson Police helped in expediting the ambulance ride to the hospital, Pontillo added.

“Unfortunately, the patient was later pronounced deceased at the hospital,” Pontillo said. “How we came to end up in the pool is currently under investigation at this time.”

The chief added the man’s name is not being released right now “out of respect for the family and investigation.”
