Woman Jumps From Bridge Over Raritan Bay, Survives 135 Ft. Fall

SAYREVILLE, NJ — A woman jumped Wednesday from the Thomas Edison Bridge, which carries Rt. 9 north over where the Raritan River empties into Raritan Bay, according to Sayreville Police.

The woman jumped off the bridge at approximately 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.

However, she miraculously survived the fall, said police. She was rescued and pulled from the water below by Perth Amboy Police officers, who responded in their boat, said Sayreville Police spokesman Lt. James Novak.

The Thomas Edison bridge is 135 feet tall. It is one of the most heavily traveled bridges in the state, carrying 82,000 cars over it per day. She did not jump off the Victory Bridge that carries Rt. 35 over Raritan Bay; Novak said he mistakenly told other media that.

He said Woodbridge Police and State Police also assisted, but Perth Amboy Police were the main rescue agency.

Police and rescue crews were seen in the Keasbey section of Woodbridge Wednesday afternoon as the woman was taken to shore. As of Friday, her medical status is unknown.

Police also did not release the woman's age or what town she resides in.
