2 Pets Die In House Fire In Franklin Lakes: Officials

Two pets died in a house fire in Franklin Lakes over the weekend. The Fire Department has given an update.

FRANKLIN LAKES, NJ — Two cats died and a resident was treated for smoke inhalation as a result of a house fire in Franklin Lakes on Saturday, the Fire Department said.

Franklin Lakes firefighters reported Saturday that 911 callers reported smoke coming from a home that morning.

"While en route, chief of Department Chuck Bohny requested a second alarm, bringing additional manpower from surrounding towns for assistance on scene and for borough coverage," the department said in a message.

Franklin Lakes EMS treated one resident for smoke inhalation. Three pet dogs were safely rescued, but two cats were found dead, the department said.

The fire, on Arapaho Trail, closed the road for a time, according to online reports.

The Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Arson Squad is assisting in the investigation, the Fire Department said.

In addition, the home has been deemed uninhabitable.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, officials said.

Fire officials said, "We thank all responding units and mutual aid for their efforts and express our condolences to the family for their loss."
